Sons of Promise

MENTORSHIP & EDUCATION

The Sons of Promise seeks to provide a network of support for middle school boys ages 9-13 through relevant academic, career, and social experiences that foster their success in school, relationships, and future careers. This is achieved through workshops, exploratory learning, sports, and mentoring.

Over the past three years, Eight Million Stories (8MS) has focused on addressing opportunity gaps experienced by historically underserved youth in Houston—particularly those who have been disconnected from school and work due to systemic barriers.

Through our work, we have learned that many of the young people we serve—especially young men—begin encountering significant challenges as early as middle school, and in some cases even earlier. These challenges are often rooted in broader structural inequities, such as disproportionate discipline practices, limited access to supportive services, and underinvestment in communities of color.

By recognizing these patterns early, we are better positioned to create proactive, culturally responsive, and youth-centered interventions that affirm the potential of every young person and support their long-term success.

These conversations prompted us to explore proactive, equity-driven strategies to address the challenges facing young boys—particularly those from historically marginalized communities—who are often disproportionately funneled from schools into the juvenile justice system.

“Just a note to thank the Director and staff of ‘Unlock My Genius: A stem camp for boys’ for providing an awesome experience for my Godson Ayden. He is not easily excited about anything remotely academic, but he returned to the car Monday afternoon, pumped up! He declared that he was so glad that he decided to come to this camp.”
